- How to thread a Serger -
A third of my photo story How to thread a Serger can be viewed on Teacher Tube when they are not updating their system. To help fix the inability to view the whole video I have uploaded My video to my blog through Blogger.
I decided to use threading a Serger/Overlock machine because that is what I am currently teaching in the APPD 1101 class at Pierpont C&TC. This video can be used in FACS (Fashion Design) classes in the middle schools, high schools, and colleges, as well as in community education classes.
This was a fun project. I think that the use of Photo Story itself could be used as a teaching tool with students. It in my opinion would allow them to take ownership of their projects a little more then PowerPoint.

Power Point #1 and Google Presentation Embed
I decided to use dating as my topic for PowerPoint 1. The reason for this is that was one of the topics being taught at the high school when I did some job shadowing in the spring of 2008. The class I was in was the life connection class, at a local high school, which is part of the FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) program.
Trying to spread the information out over 65 slides was new to me. I found it to be a whole new learning experience. Once I got the hang of it I really liked the readability of my slides.

Jackson Pollock
I must say I could not figure this out! Who is Jackson Pollock? Why would I want something that looked like this and then I thought about my Design Concepts class. There was an activity that required us to scribble on a piece of paper for one minute. Once we were done we were to identify the picture/items we could see. This scribble (HaHa)was created without killing trees.
I would have liked to changed the color. As for the stroke thickness I did figure out how to lighten it by putting less pressure on the mouse. I looked up Jackson Pollock to see why this was considered his style. I now know!

Self Portrait
I used Mrpicassohead to create my self portrait. I put one of my cats in the portrait also.
I really didn’t encounter any issues using this program. It was fun and relaxing. I did however use one of the shortcuts that I’ve used in the APPD 2202 class I teach in the spring. The shortcut was to highlight an item I wanted to move and while holding down the shift key and clicking the up, down, right or left arrows I could move the item/object just ever so slightly.

Web Album
I used Picasa to create this Web Album. It includes pictures from as far away as Greece. This was fun and easy to do. I must say that it is a lot like putting pics on Facebook but I don't have to look all of the place for them I just go to Google and click on photos.
Creating a web photo album relates to ISTE NETS T standard #2 Design and develop digital age learning experiences because of contemporary tools. If students were the the ones actually preforming the file conversion then ISTE NETS T #1 Facilitate and inspire student creativity and innovation by engaging students in exploring real world issues using digital tools would be met. Teaching Advanced Apparel Design requires the use of a computer software package that is a plug-in to Adobe Illustrator. All files are in the .ai format so a with a screen capturing tool students be able to save their designs as a jpeg. would be very beneficial so students could send designs to their clients (if they were real clients)without their clients having to have Adobe Illustrator. Also a web photo album would allow the students in Principles of Clothing Construction class to take picture of their garment designs and have them at their fingertips at an interview. As the instructor I would teach the students to use these items to their fullest benefit.

Kid's Zone
I decided to use a line graph to show the average of fourth grade reading as my first graph. In this graph I used a 210-225 scale to show the differences between the state of West Virginia and the National averages.
I decided to use a line graph to show the average of eighth grade math for my second graph. In this graph I used a 240-300 scale to show the differences between the state of West Virginia and the National averages.

Crappy Graphics

I created two graphics and cannot decide which to use so I think I will post both. My first image is titled Sewing Techniquies and my second image is titled Measure 5/8" for seam allowance. Both of these can be used in the fashion design class and the clothing construction class. The use of this program and the images that it can create could meet both subject(s) and technology (t) requirements of the TPACK. However, there would be need for a very watchful eye of 5th - 12th graders using this program. They could create a graphic without viewing the ones already on the site.

Image Capture
Using the Microsoft snipping tool that came with my computer I was able to capture my image. The file size is 167 KB (171,613 bytes) before posting to my blog. In my blog it is 32421 bytes and it is a .jpg. Once I captured my image I used paint to write a message the would and is taught in a nutrition class which is part of the FACS disciple.
Images like this one could be used in the classroom to improve student learning in so many ways. 1. The web address in the image could be used so that the students had a place to refer back to. 2. The image can stress important point. 3. Some students learn better when visual images are used. 4. An image created from the computer that students have already seen can reinforce the lesson that was being tauhgt.

Desktop Graphic
To use the Microsoft Paint - One has to access the program first. On my computer I had to go to and click on the start button. Then I had to go the All Programs menu and select Accessories. From there I clicked on the Paint program (which is the word Paint) and it opened in a small window. I used the pencil tool the most! When creating a graphic using Paint the creator can use any of the tools to the left in the tool area that they want. The different colors can be chosen from the colors along the top. If a mistake is made the creator can go to edit and it will undo the last thing drawn. Be carefully it will get rid of everything that was created in that move/addition to the graphic. Example: I was trying to draw a person (silhouette) to use in the either of the two classes I teach. [One way to use it would be mark the areas that need measured to decide the right pattern size and the other way would be to use it as a silhouette of a client and then create the garment(s) in a sketch or finally drawing that allows the client to see what you (the designer has to offer.] I really messed up one leg so I undone the action and the whole silhouette was undone because I never picked up my pencil tool – so it was seen as one action. Need I say I changed my mind and created a different graphic that can be used in the principles of clothing construction class here at FSU or in the fashion design class at any high, jr high, or middle school.
The different programs I considered were Adobe Illustrator 9.1, a program called Ink that is on my tablet PC, Adobe CS4, GIMP 2.6, and Microsoft Paint. I chose the program Microsoft Paint because my other computer is in need of a good doctor and I was not able to use the Adobe Illustrator or the Ink program that is on that computer. Also the Adobe CS4 is on the computers in the FSU Library computer lab first floor and I just was not going back to campus tonight. So that left me with the choice between GIMP 2.6 that is new to me or Microsoft Paint that I have played with a little. I think I have state the bad above. As for the good about Microsoft Paint is it to me is fun (a little time consuming but fun. I really don’t think there is too many questions that came from this activity expect. Why there are so many desktop graphic programs out that are so alike and are free? It’s not like someone is getting rich on them. Or are they?
I saved my graphic as a JPEG image (.jpg) and titled it Name the Parts in Windows Photo Gallery. The size is 22.6 KB (23,179 bytes); size on disk is 24.0KB (24,576 bytes).

Delicious
Delicious steps:
The three steps in the film on Delicious are:
1. Sign up at delicious.com
2. Use tags to save web sites
3. Be social and have fun!
Delicious is a social bookmarking website.
Web 2.0
Web 2.0 described and some differences of previous stages of the web.
Web 2.0 shall I call it the new and improved World Wide Web. It came about in or around 2001 when .com became so popular. There is a lot more interaction with things like social networking (Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter) and e-businesses. Any kind of computer program that creates a way for people to communicate could be considered Web 2.0 - I think (?). Back in 1996 the WWW (World Wide Web) was somewhat new and there wasn’t a lot of two way interaction taking place. In fact, it Mosaic [if I remember correctly] that was used to teach people how to use the WWW. It was a lot like placing tile pieces together to create a whole, I guess that was Web 1.0. Anyway I have read some where that Web 2.0 is just jargon which made me think it is somewhat of a hybrid. Where parts are take from here and there to create a whole.
Social bookmarking defined and advantages of social bookmarking.
Social bookmarking is done on a web site not one computer. It uses tags to bookmark a web site instead of the favorites file on one computer. It has the advantage of being used any where on any computer. It also has the a very helpful advantage and that is I don't have to find the web sites and mark them myself. I can use other peoples simply by using a subscription and tag that is one word. These tags will let me pick which web sites I want in my list at any given time. Example: I have Education as one of my subscription/tag so I can view everybody's that has that same tag. In my favorites I have to look through every web site that I have saved, too time consuming!
